Social Justice Themed Worship Resources

Environment

  • Exploring God’s Green Word  This four-part Bible study has been prepared by the Social Justice Board. The studies explore humankind’s relationship with all of God’s creations. The studies have been adapted using material from the Eco-Congregation (Ireland). Download.
  • Sustainable September 2008 Founded in 2003, Sustainable September is a communication campaign that demonstrates and celebrates the wide range of activities that are creating a just, sustainable and prosperous Western Australia. Sustainable September is an opportunity for people to experience sustainability in action. A four part bible study series and liturgical resources have been prepared for use during Sustainable September 2008 (or at other times as desired). These resources can be downloaded from our Green Church website.
  • Sustainable September 2009 In 2009, Rev Gordon Scantlebury and Rev Kira Ham Jamieson assisted with the preparation of resources for congregations to use during Sustainable September. Gordon prepared a four-part bible study series challenging us to think in an integrated way of faith and science, and challengeing us to consider our commitment to sustainable living as an imperative - not an optional extra. Kira uses her gifts to resource us for each worship experience, to explore our relationship with God, and consequently the earth. The worship resources prepared by Kira offer readings, reflective psalms, prayers and hymn/song suggestions. These resources can be downloaded from our Green Church website.

Reconciliation

  • Sorry Day & National Reconciliation Week 2008: Liturgical Resources  These liturgical resources have been prepared by the Uniting Church National Assembly. While these resources were made available specifically for Sorry Day (26 May) and National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June), the theme of reconciliation is suitable for any and every week, so feel free to use the resources on other dates and occasions too. Download.

Poverty

  • NOT ENOUGH Combatting Poverty: Local Action Makes the Difference  This poverty resource kit (prepared by UnitingCare Australia) is designed for use across the life of the Uniting Church. It aims to empower congregations and UnitingCare agencies and missions to move beyond concern about poverty, to action that will make a significant impact on poverty in Australia. The resource consists of four 90-minute sessions (with options for those who are members of the Uniting Church and for those staff in Uniting Church agencies and missions). Go to UnitingCare website.
  • Social Justice Sunday 2008: Faces of Poverty  This year on Social Justice Sunday (or on another Sunday, with your Bible study or fellowship group, or during some quiet time on your own), you are invited to think about poverty through four special stories. The National Council of Churches in Australia has this year produced a collection of four stories and reflections for use on Social Justice Sunday. Social Justice Sunday: Faces of Poverty.

Sustainability

  • Social Justice Sunday 2009: Hope for the Common Good As people who receive the planet as God’s sacred gift to us, we have a particular responsibility to live in harmony with and care for the natural world, ensuring that God’s gift will be enjoyed by the generations to come. The Social Justice Network (of the National Council of Churches in Australia) have produced a six page resource to assist church groups and others to look Beyond the Global Financial Crisis, to assist those most vulnerable and use our God given talents to live responsibly in the world. For the month of October, we encourage you to think about the human rights abuses being faced by people in the countries of Burma, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the Indonesian province of Papua. We have compiled resources which can be used as a part of worship services, and Rev Bill Loader has prepared reflections on the gospel readings from Mark, Chapter 10.
