Caring

The Uniting Church is the largest non-government provider of community services in Australia.

In WA we have four agencies belonging to the national UnitingCare network: Good Samaritan Industries (GSI or Good Sammy’s), UnitingCare Crossroads WA, UnitingCare West and Uniting Church Homes.

Together with our smaller congregation-based projects, these agencies seek to be the hands and face of Jesus to those most in need.

Toodyay in Recovery

January 20, 2010

When Toodyay was hit by a massive bushfire on Monday 29 December, 2009, there were stories of serious destruction. Fire-fighters worked hard that night, and in a show of community spirit, volunteers rallied together from many surrounding towns such as York, Wongan Hills and as far as Rockingham, to help put out the blaze. Reports suggest up to 3,000 hectares of land was burnt, and 37 houses were destroyed. Thankfully, no lives were lost, although some people have been injured.
Max Heath, Toodyay fire fighter and Uniting Church member, in was in charge of operational control of extinguishing the fire — until Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) took over — and worked tirelessly at controlling it.
“It’s the biggest fire we’ve had in Toodyay in terms of loss of property,” he said. “How we never lost lives I just don’t know. The water bombers and fire fighters have all done such a good job.”
